Two-particle Bose–Einstein momentum correlation functions are studied for charged-hadron pairs in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN= 5.02 TeV. The data sample, containing 4.27× 10 9 minimum bias events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.607 nb− 1, was collected by the CMS experiment in 2018. The experimental results are discussed in terms of a Lévy-type source distribution. The parameters of this distribution are extracted as functions of particle pair average transverse mass and collision centrality. These parameters include the Lévy index or shape parameter α, the Lévy scale parameter R, and the correlation strength parameter λ. The source shape, characterized by α, is found to be neither Cauchy nor Gaussian, implying the need for a full Lévy analysis. Similarly to what was previously found for systems characterized by Gaussian source radii, a …

Measurements of Higgs boson production, where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of τ leptons, are presented, using a sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1. Three analyses are presented. Two are targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion: a neural network based analysis and an analysis based on an event categorization optimized on the ratio of signal over background events. These are complemented by an analysis targeting vector boson associated Higgs boson production. Results are presented in the form of signal strengths relative to the standard model predictions and products of cross sections and branching fraction to τ leptons, in up to 16 different kinematic regions. For the simultaneous measurements of the neural network based analysis and the …

Nanopowders of strontium fluoroapatite Sr5(PO4)3F (SFAP) were synthesized using a co-precipitation method with different starting strontium compounds. Based on the data of XRD, BET and SEM measurements, the nitrate-derived powders were chosen as the least agglomerated. The SFAP powders were hot pressed at 1000 °C to ceramic samples with a transmittance up to 82% in a mid-IR region. The designed approach was adopted to prepare 2 mol % of Er-doped SFAP powders and ceramics. It was established that Er:SFAP ceramics have luminescence in the range of 1.5–1.7 μm, the intensity of which increases with the calcination temperature of the initial powders.

Measurements are presented of the B s 0→ μ+ μ− branching fraction and effective lifetime, as well as results of a search for the B 0→ μ+ μ− decay in proton-proton collisions at s= 13 TeV at the LHC. The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector in 2016–2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb− 1. The branching fraction of the B s 0→ μ+ μ− decay and the effective B s 0 meson lifetime are the most precise single measurements to date. No evidence for the B 0→ μ+ μ− decay has been found. All results are found to be consistent with the standard model predictions and previous measurements.

Novel IR-transparent ceramics of erbium-doped Lu2O3-MgO and Sc2O3-MgO composites have been successfully obtained using a combination of glycine–nitrate self-propagating high-temperature synthesis and vacuum hot-pressing methods. Composites have densities greater than 99.5% of those calculated by X-ray diffraction and consist of uniformly distributed submicron grains of magnesium and rare earth oxides. The transmittances of 1.5 mm thick composites are as high as 84.5% and 78.9% at ~5 µm for Er:Lu2O3-MgO and Er:Sc2O3-MgO, respectively. Both composites are favorable matrices for doping with erbium ions, which exhibit intense luminescence in the visible, near, and mid-IR under relevant excitation. The position of the luminescence bands is similar to Er:Lu2O3 and Er:Sc2O3 ceramics; the lifetimes of the 4I13/2 state are 8.85 ± 0.1 ms and 5.7 ± 0.2 ms for 3%Er:Lu2O3-MgO and 3%Er:Sc2O3-MgO, respectively.

We present a new class of dark matter (DM) models wherein the Standard Model (SM) is extended with a new S U (2) D dark gauge sector. In this framework, the stability of DM is provided by the conservation of a U (1) global symmetry which, upon appropriate charge assignments for the S U (2) D multiplets, effectively leads to a Z 2 symmetry subgroup. The origin of the global U (1) symmetry which ensures the stability of DM can be justified in the form of a dark electroweak (EW) sector or through an underlying composite structure. The key ingredient of the model is a vectorlike (VL) fermion doublet of S U (2) D, the members of which are singlets of the SM EW gauge group, which mediate the interactions between the dark sector and the SM, via new Yukawa interactions. This class of models, labeled as fermion portal vector DM (FPVDM), allows multiple realizations, depending on the properties of the VL partner and …

We suggest an explanation for and explore the consequences of the excess around 95 GeV in the di-photon and di-tau invariant mass distributions recently reported by the CMS collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), together with the discrepancy that has long been observed at the Large Electron-Positron (LEP) collider in the invariant mass. Interestingly, the most recent findings announced by the ATLAS collaboration do not contradict, or even support, these intriguing observations. Their search in the di-photon final state similarly reveals an excess of events within the same mass range, albeit with a bit lower significance, thereby corroborating and somewhat reinforcing the observations made by CMS. We have found that all three signatures can be explained within the general 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) Type-III. We demonstrate that the lightest CP-even Higgs boson in this scenario can explain the excess in all three channels simultaneously, i.e., in the di-photon, di-tau and mass spectra, while satisfying up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints. Moreover, the 2HDM Type-III predicts an excess in the production channel of the 125 GeV Higgs boson discovered in 2012, with properties (couplings, spin and CP quantum numbers) consistent with those predicted in the Standard Model (SM). This effect is caused by a up to 18\% enhancement of the Yukawa coupling to top (anti)quarks in comparison to the SM value. Such an effect can be tested soon at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), which can either discover or exclude the scenario we suggest. This unique characteristic of the 2HDM Type-III makes this …

The influence of pre-sowing treatment of holy thistle seeds (Silybum marianum) by hydrostatic pressure (from 10 to 200 MPa) on the dynamics of the emergence of seedlings and the subsequent development of seedlings in the open ground in the Middle Urals has been studied. It is shown that the treatment of seeds with a pressure of 10 MPa during their subsequent sowing a day later (after drying) provided good germination and accelerated the passage of all stages of the ontogenesis of holy thistle plants in the dry growing season of 2021. At the same time, earlier and more friendly maturation of seeds was observed in comparison with the control group of plants. Under more favourable weather conditions in 2022, holy thistle seeds after the same pressure treatment (10MPa) and drying showed very good field germination (76%), a high rate of ontogenesis of seedlings similar to the reference and the best …

A measurement of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of Lorentz-boosted top quarks is presented. The measurement is performed in the lepton + jets channel of top quark pair production () events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay are reconstructed using a single large-radius jet with transverse momentum greater than 400. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138. The differential production cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded to the particle level and is used to extract the top quark mass. The jet mass scale is calibrated using the hadronic W boson decay within the large-radius jet. The uncertainties in the modelling of the final state radiation are reduced by studying angular correlations in the jet substructure. These developments lead to …

We search for new massive scalar particles X and Y through the resonant process X→ Y H→ b b¯ b b¯, where H is the standard model Higgs boson. Data from CERN LHC proton-proton collisions are used, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016–2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1. The search is performed in mass ranges of 0.9–4 TeV for X and 60–600 GeV for Y, where both Y and H are reconstructed as Lorentz-boosted single large-area jets. The results are interpreted in the context of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model and also in an extension of the standard model with two additional singlet scalar fields. The 95% confidence level upper limits for the production cross section vary between 0.1 and 150 fb depending on the X and Y masses, and represent a significant improvement over results from previous searches.

An inclusive search for long-lived exotic particles decaying to a pair of muons is presented. The search uses data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV in 2016 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 97.6 fb− 1. The experimental signature is a pair of oppositely charged muons originating from a common secondary vertex spatially separated from the pp interaction point by distances ranging from several hundred μm to several meters. The results are interpreted in the frameworks of the hidden Abelian Higgs model, in which the Higgs boson decays to a pair of long-lived dark photons Z D, and of a simplified model, in which long-lived particles are produced in decays of an exotic heavy neutral scalar boson. For the hidden Abelian Higgs model with m (Z D) greater than 20 GeV and less than half the mass of the Higgs boson, they provide the …

A search is reported for near-threshold structures in the J/J/ invariant mass spectrum produced in proton-proton collisions at = 13 TeV from data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 135 fb. A new structure is observed with a significance above 5 standard deviations at a mass of 6552 10 (stat) 12 (syst) MeV. Another structure with even higher significance is found at a mass of 6927 9 (stat) 4 (syst) MeV, which is consistent with the X(6900) resonance reported by the LHCb experiment and confirmed by the ATLAS experiment. Evidence for another new structure, with a local significance of 4.1 standard deviations, is found at a mass of 7287 (stat) 5 (syst) MeV. The masses and significances are obtained in a model without considering possible quantum mechanical interference between the resonances. Incorporating this interference provides a better description of the mass spectrum between the resonances and shifts the measured masses by up to 150 MeV.

A search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark, the top squark (), is presented. The search targets the four-body decay of the, which is preferred when the mass difference between the top squark and the lightest supersymmetric particle is smaller than the mass of the W boson. This decay mode consists of a bottom quark, two other fermions, and the lightest neutralino (), which is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Events are selected using the presence of a high-momentum jet, an electron or muon with low transverse momentum, and a significant missing transverse momentum. The signal is selected based on a multivariate approach that is optimized for the difference between m () and …

The effect of sewage sludge as a fertilizer-ameliorant in the safflower cultivation was studied. Sewage sludge from Volzhskij wastewater treatment plants prepurified by enzyme-cavitation method was used as a fertilizer-ameliorant in the safflower cultivation. It was found that prepurified sewage sludge is environmentally friendly and has a high fertilizing value. The amino acid composition of safflower seeds was studied. The obtained data indicate that sewage sludge introduction made it possible to significantly increase the safflower nutritional value and the soil microbiological activity. It was found that the greatest increase in the safflower crop yields was observed in the case of sewage sludge introduction at a dose of 10 t/ha with chisel tillage. It can be stated that the technology of safflower cultivation proposed by us, including the application of sewage sludge as a fertilizer-ameliorant in combination with the chisel …

A search for the lepton-flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson and potential additional Higgs bosons with a mass in the range 110–160 GeV to an e±μ∓ pair is presented. The search is performed with a proton-proton collision dataset at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1. No excess is observed for the Higgs boson. The observed (expected) upper limit on the e±μ∓ branching fraction for it is determined to be 4.4 (4.7)× 10− 5 at 95% confidence level, the most stringent limit set thus far from direct searches. The largest excess of events over the expected background in the full mass range of the search is observed at an e±μ∓ invariant mass of approximately 146 GeV with a local (global) significance of 3.8 (2.8) standard deviations.

Decays of the Higgs boson into a Image 1 boson and a Image 2 or Image 3 meson are searched for in four-lepton final states with the CMS detector at the LHC. A data set of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1 is used. Using the same data set, decays of the Higgs and Image 1 boson into quarkonium pairs are also searched for. An observation of such decays with this sample would indicate the presence of physics beyond the standard model. No evidence for these decays has been observed and upper limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the corresponding branching fractions (B). Assuming longitudinal polarization of the Higgs boson decay products, 95% confidence level observed upper limits for Image 4 and Image 5 are 1.9× 10− 3 and 6.6× 10− 3, respectively.

The collective behavior of and strange hadrons is studied by measuring the elliptic azimuthal anisotropy (v 2) using the scalar-product and multiparticle correlation methods. Proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy= 8. 16 TeV and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at= 5. 02 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC are investigated. Nonflow effects in the pPb collisions are studied by using a subevent cumulant analysis and by excluding events where a jet with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV is present. The strange hadron v 2 values extracted in pPb collisions via the four-and six-particle correlation method are found to be nearly identical, suggesting the collective behavior. Comparisons of the pPb and PbPb results for both strange hadrons and charged particles illustrate how event-by-event flow fluctuations depend on the system size.

Platelet adhesion and activation are essential initial processes of arterial and microvascular hemostasis, where high hydrodynamic forces from the bloodflow impede coagulation. The process relies on von Willebrand factor (VWF)—a linear multimeric protein of blood plasma plays a pivotal role in mechanochemical regulation of shear-induced platelet aggregation (SIPA). Adhesive interactions between VWF and glycoprotein receptors GPIb are crucial for platelet recruitment under high shear stress in fluid. Recent advances in experimental studies revealed that mechanical tension on the extracellular part of GPIb may trigger a cascade of biochemical reactions in platelets leading to activation of integrins (also known as GPIIb/IIIa) and strengthening of the adhesion. The present paper is aimed at investigation of this process by three-dimensional computer simulations of platelet adhesion to surface-grafted VWF …

The results of a search for Higgs boson pair (HH) production in the WW* WW*, WW* ττ, and ττττ decay modes are presented. The search uses 138 fb− 1 of proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV from 2016 to 2018. Analyzed events contain two, three, or four reconstructed leptons, including electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons. No evidence for a signal is found in the data. Upper limits are set on the cross section for nonresonant HH production, as well as resonant production in which a new heavy particle decays to a pair of Higgs bosons. For nonresonant production, the observed (expected) upper limit on the cross section at 95% confidence level (CL) is 21.3 (19.4) times the standard model (SM) prediction. The observed (expected) ratio of the trilinear Higgs boson self-coupling to its value in the SM is constrained to be within …
