Two-particle Bose–Einstein momentum correlation functions are studied for charged-hadron pairs in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN= 5.02 TeV. The data sample, containing 4.27× 10 9 minimum bias events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.607 nb− 1, was collected by the CMS experiment in 2018. The experimental results are discussed in terms of a Lévy-type source distribution. The parameters of this distribution are extracted as functions of particle pair average transverse mass and collision centrality. These parameters include the Lévy index or shape parameter α, the Lévy scale parameter R, and the correlation strength parameter λ. The source shape, characterized by α, is found to be neither Cauchy nor Gaussian, implying the need for a full Lévy analysis. Similarly to what was previously found for systems characterized by Gaussian source radii, a …

An inclusive search for long-lived exotic particles (LLPs) decaying to final states with a pair of muons is presented. The search uses data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.6 fb collected by the CMS experiment from the proton-proton collisions at = 13.6 TeV in 2022, the first year of Run 3 of the CERN LHC. The experimental signature is a pair of oppositely charged muons originating from a common vertex spatially separated from the proton-proton interaction point by distances ranging from several hundred m to several meters. The sensitivity of the search benefits from new triggers for displaced dimuons developed for Run 3. The results are interpreted in the framework of the hidden Abelian Higgs model, in which the Higgs boson decays to a pair of long-lived dark photons, and of an -parity violating supersymmetry model, in which long-lived neutralinos decay to a pair of muons and a neutrino. The limits set on these models are the most stringent to date in wide regions of lifetimes for LLPs with masses larger than 10 GeV.

A search for the electroweak production of a vector-like quark T′, decaying to a top quark and a Higgs boson is presented. The search is based on a sample of proton-proton collision events recorded at the LHC at= 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1. This is the first T′ search that exploits the Higgs boson decay to a pair of photons. For narrow isospin singlet T′ states with masses up to 1.1 TeV, the excellent diphoton invariant mass resolution of 1–2% results in an increased sensitivity compared to previous searches based on the same production mechanism. The electroweak production of a T′ quark with mass up to 960 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a coupling strength κ T= 0. 25 and a relative decay width Γ/M T′< 5%.

Results are presented on a search for CP violation in the production and decay of top quark-antiquark pairs in the lepton+jets channel. The search is based on data from proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Possible CP violation effects are evaluated by measuring asymmetries in observables constructed from linearly independent four-momentum vectors of the final-state particles. The dimensionless chromoelectric dipole moment of the top quark obtained from the observed asymmetries is measured to be 0.04 ± 0.10 (stat) ± 0.07(syst), and the asymmetries exhibit no evidence for CP-violating effects, consistent with expectations from the standard model. The hydrodynamic flow-like behavior of charged hadrons in high-energy lead-lead collisions is studied through multiparticle correlations. The elliptic anisotropy values based on different orders of multiparticle cumulants, v 2 {2k}, are measured up to the tenth order (k= 5) as functions of the collision centrality at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of= 5. 02 TeV. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 0.607 nb− 1. A hierarchy is observed between the coefficients, with v 2 {2}> v 2 {4}≳ v 2 {6}≳ v 2 {8}≳ v 2 {10}. Based on these results, centrality-dependent moments for the fluctuation-driven event-by-event v 2 distribution are determined, including the skewness, kurtosis and, for the first time, superskewness. Assuming a hydrodynamic expansion of the produced medium, these moments directly probe the initial-state geometry in high-energy …

A search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark, the top squark (), is presented. The search targets the four-body decay of the, which is preferred when the mass difference between the top squark and the lightest supersymmetric particle is smaller than the mass of the W boson. This decay mode consists of a bottom quark, two other fermions, and the lightest neutralino (), which is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Events are selected using the presence of a high-momentum jet, an electron or muon with low transverse momentum, and a significant missing transverse momentum. A search for long-lived particles decaying in the outer regions of the CMS silicon tracker or in the calorimeters is presented. The search is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1. A novel technique, using nearly trackless and out-of-time jet information combined in a deep neural network discriminator, is employed to identify decays of long-lived particles. The results are interpreted in a simplified model of chargino-neutralino production, where the neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle, is long-lived, and decays to a gravitino and either a Higgs or Z boson. This search is most sensitive to neutralino proper decay lengths of approximately 0.5 m, for which masses up to 1.18 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. The current search is the best result to date in the …

Results are presented from a search for CP violation in top quark pair production, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used for this analysis consist of final states with two charged leptons collected by the CMS experiment, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb− 1. The search uses two observables, 1 and 3, which are Lorentz scalars. The observable 1 is constructed from the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the reconstructed top quarks, while 3 consists of the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the b quarks originating from the top quarks. Asymmetries in these observables are sensitive to CP violation, and their measurement is used to determine the chromoelectric dipole moment of the top quark. The results are consistent with the expectation from the standard model.

Decays of the Higgs boson into a Image 1 boson and a Image 2 or Image 3 meson are searched for in four-lepton final states with the CMS detector at the LHC. A data set of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1 is used. Using the same data set, decays of the Higgs and Image 1 boson into quarkonium pairs are also searched for. An observation of such decays with this sample would indicate the presence of physics beyond the standard model. No evidence for these decays has been observed and upper limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the corresponding branching fractions (B). Assuming longitudinal polarization of the Higgs boson decay products, 95% confidence level observed upper limits for Image 4 and Image 5 are 1.9× 10− 3 and 6.6× 10− 3, respectively.

Measurements of inclusive and normalized differential cross sections of the associated production of top quark-antiquark and bottom quark-antiquark pairs, ttbb, are presented. The results are based on data from proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1. The cross sections are measured in the lepton+ jets decay channel of the top quark pair, using events containing exactly one isolated electron or muon and at least five jets. Measurements are made in four fiducial phase space regions, targeting different aspects of the ttbb process. Distributions are unfolded to the particle level through maximum likelihood fits, and compared with predictions from several event generators. The inclusive cross section measurements of this process in the fiducial phase space regions are the most precise to date. In most cases, the measured inclusive cross sections exceed the predictions with the chosen generator settings. The only exception is when using a particular choice of dynamic renormalization scale, µR= 12 ni= t, t, b, b m1/4

A search is presented for slepton pairs produced in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13. The search is carried out in events containing two leptons in the final state, on the assumption that each slepton decays primarily to a lepton and a neutralino. Events are considered in which each lepton decays to one or more hadrons and a neutrino, or in which one of the leptons decays instead to an electron or a muon and two neutrinos. The data, collected with the CMS detector in 2016 and 2017, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77.2. The observed data are consistent with the standard model background expectation. The results are used to set 95% confidence level upper limits on the cross section for slepton pair production in various models for slepton masses between 90 and 200 and neutralino masses of 1, 10, and 20. In the case of purely left-handed slepton production and …

A search for supersymmetry is presented in events with a single charged lepton, electron or muon, and multiple hadronic jets. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The search targets gluino pair production, where the gluinos decay into final states with the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and either a top quark-antiquark () pair, or a light-flavor quark-antiquark () pair and a virtual or on-shell W boson. The main backgrounds, pair and W+ jets production, are suppressed by requirements on the azimuthal angle between the momenta of the lepton and of its reconstructed parent W boson candidate, and by top quark and W boson identification based on a machine-learning technique. The number of observed events is consistent with the expectations from standard model …

We present an observation of photon-photon production of lepton pairs in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. The measurement is based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 404 b collected by the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The process is observed for events with a muon and three charged hadrons in the final state. The measured fiducial cross section is = 4.8 0.6 (stat) 0.5 (syst) b, in agreement with leading-order QED predictions. Using , we estimate a model-dependent value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the lepton of = 0.001 .

The second-order () and third-order () Fourier coefficients describing the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt (from b-hadron decays) J/, as well as prompt (2S) mesons are measured in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of = 5.02 TeV. The analysis uses a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.61 nb recorded with the CMS detector. The J/ and (2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay channel. The and coefficients are extracted using the scalar product method and studied as functions of meson transverse momentum and collision centrality. The measured values for prompt J/ mesons are found to be larger than those for nonprompt J/ mesons. The prompt J/ values at high are found to be underpredicted by a model incorporating only parton energy loss effects in a quark-gluon plasma medium. Prompt and nonprompt J/ meson and prompt (2S) and values are also reported for the first time, providing new information about heavy quark interactions in the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.

The first search is presented for vector-like leptons (VLLs) in the context of the “4321 model”, an ultraviolet-complete model with the potential to explain existing B physics measurements that are in tension with standard model predictions. The analyzed data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 96.5 fb− 1, were recorded in 2017 and 2018 with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at s= 13 TeV. Final states with≥ 3 b-tagged jets and two third-generation leptons (ττ, τ ν τ, or ν τ ν τ) are considered. Upper limits are derived on the VLL production cross section in the VLL mass range 500–1050 GeV. The maximum likelihood fit prefers the presence of signal at the level of 2.8 standard deviations, for a representative VLL mass point of 600 GeV. As a consequence, the observed upper limits are approximately double the expected limits.

Measurements of the inclusive and normalised differential cross sections are presented for the production of single top quarks in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC during 2016–2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1. Events containing one electron and one muon in the final state are analysed. For the inclusive measurement, a multivariate discriminant, exploiting the kinematic properties of the events is used to separate the signal from the dominant background. A cross section of pb is obtained, consistent with the predictions of the standard model. For the differential measurements, a fiducial region is defined according to the detector acceptance, and the requirement of exactly one jet coming from the fragmentation of a bottom quark. The …

The dependence of the ratio between the B s 0 and B+ hadron production fractions, f s/f u, on the transverse momentum (p T) and rapidity of the B mesons is studied using the decay channels B s 0→ J/ψ ϕ and B+→ J/ψ K+. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.6 fb− 1. The f s/f u ratio is observed to depend on the B p T and to be consistent with becoming asymptotically constant at large p T. No rapidity dependence is observed. The ratio of the B 0 to B+ meson production fractions, f d/f u, is also measured, for the first time in proton-proton collisions, using the B 0→ J/ψ K* 0 decay channel. The result is found to be within 1 standard deviation of unity and independent of p T and rapidity, as expected from isospin invariance.

A search for the exotic decay of the Higgs boson to a pair of light pseudoscalars, each of which subsequently decays into a pair of photons, is presented. The search uses data from proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 132 fb− 1. The analysis probes pseudoscalar bosons with masses in the range 15–62 GeV, coming from the Higgs boson decay, which leads to four well-isolated photons in the final state. No significant deviation from the background-only hypothesis is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the Higgs boson production cross section and branching fraction into four photons. The observed (expected) limits range from 0.80 (1.00) fb for a pseudoscalar boson mass of 15 GeV to 0.26 (0.24) fb for a mass of 62 GeV at 95% confidence level.

Measurements are presented of the B s 0→ μ+ μ− branching fraction and effective lifetime, as well as results of a search for the B 0→ μ+ μ− decay in proton-proton collisions at s= 13 TeV at the LHC. The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector in 2016–2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb− 1. The branching fraction of the B s 0→ μ+ μ− decay and the effective B s 0 meson lifetime are the most precise single measurements to date. No evidence for the B 0→ μ+ μ− decay has been found. All results are found to be consistent with the standard model predictions and previous measurements.

The double differential cross sections of the Drell–Yan lepton pair (, dielectron or dimuon) production are measured as functions of the invariant mass , transverse momentum , and . The observable, derived from angular measurements of the leptons and highly correlated with , is used to probe the low- region in a complementary way. Dilepton masses up to 1 are investigated. Additionally, a measurement is performed requiring at least one jet in the final state. To benefit from partial cancellation of the systematic uncertainty, the ratios of the differential cross sections for various ranges to those in the Z mass peak interval are presented. The collected data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 of proton–proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13. Measurements are compared with predictions based on perturbative …
