A method is presented to reconstruct charged particles with lifetimes between 10 ps and 10 ns, which considers a combination of their decay products and the partial tracks created by the initial charged particle. Using the baryon as a benchmark, the method is demonstrated with simulated events and proton-proton collision data at TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb collected with the LHCb detector in 2018. Significant improvements in the angular resolution and the signal purity are obtained. The method is implemented as part of the LHCb Run 3 event trigger in a set of requirements to select detached hyperons. This is the first demonstration of the applicability of this approach at the LHC, and the first to show its scaling with instantaneous luminosity.

LHCb has observed giant CP violation in localized regions of the Dalitz plots of B to three charmless light mesons. This has been interpreted as an enhancement due to strong two-body final state interactions. In this talk, we show how such interactions, described with dispersive analyses of data, can be implemented beyond the leading order expansion in the two-body re-scattering amplitude.

After four months of fighting the pandemic, the city of São Paulo, Brazil, entered a phase of relaxed social distancing measures in July 2020. Simultaneously, there was a decline in the social distancing rate and a reduction in the number of cases, fatalities, and hospital bed occupancy. To understand the pandemic dynamics in the city of São Paulo, we developed a multi-agent simulation model. Surprisingly, the counter-intuitive results of the model followed the city’s reality. We argue that this phenomenon could be attributed to local bubbles of protection that emerged in the absence of contagion networks. These bubbles reduced the transmission rate of the virus, causing short and temporary reductions in the epidemic curve - but manifested as an unstable equilibrium. Our hypothesis aligns with the virus spread dynamics observed thus far, without the need for ad hoc assumptions regarding the natural thresholds of collective immunity or the heterogeneity of the population’s transmission rate, which may lead to erroneous predictions. Our model was designed to be user-friendly and does not require any scientific or programming expertise to generate outcomes on virus transmission in a given location. Furthermore, as an input to start our simulation model, we developed the COVID-19 Protection Index as an alternative to the Human Development Index, which measures a given territory vulnerability to the coronavirus and includes characteristics of the health system and socioeconomic development, as well as the infrastructure of the city of São Paulo.

The first measurement of and production in PbNe collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is reported. The production of and mesons is studied with a beam of lead ions with an energy of 2.5 per nucleon colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of . The / production cross-section ratio is studied as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum and collision centrality. These data are compared with measurements from collisions at the same energy and show no difference in the observed suppression trend when comparing and PbNe peripheral collisions with PbNe central collisions.

The analysis is performed using a sample of proton-proton collision data, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb− 1. No significant signal is observed, and upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be and at the 90%(95%) confidence level.

Measurements of C P asymmetries in charmless three-body decays of B±mesons are reported using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.9 fb− 1. The previously observed C P asymmetry in B±→ π±K+ K− decays is confirmed, and C P asymmetries are observed with a significance of more than five standard deviations in the B±→ π±π+ π− and B±→ K±K+ K− decays, while the C P asymmetry of B±→ K±π+ π− decays is confirmed to be compatible with zero. The distributions of these asymmetries are also studied as a function of the three-body phase space and suggest contributions from rescattering and resonance interference processes. An indication of the presence of the decays B±→ π±χ c 0 (1 P) in both B±→ π±π+ π− and B±→ π±K+ K− decays is observed, as is C P violation involving these amplitudes.

We show that final state interactions (FSI) within a C P T invariant two-channel framework can enhance the charge-parity (C P) violation difference between D 0→ π− π+ and D 0→ K− K+ decays up to the current experimental value. This result relies upon (i) the dominant tree level diagram,(ii) the well-known experimental values for the D 0→ π− π+ and D 0→ K− K+ branching ratios, and (iii) the π π→ π π and π π→ K K scattering data to extract the strong phase difference and inelasticity. Based on well-grounded theoretical properties, we find the sign and bulk value of the Δ A C P and A C P (D 0→ π− π+) recently observed by the LHCb Collaboration.

The nuclear modification factor of neutral pions is measured in proton-lead collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16 TeV with the LHCb detector. The π 0 production cross section is measured differentially in transverse momentum (p T) for 1.5< p T< 10.0 GeV and in center-of-mass pseudorapidity (η c. m.) regions 2.5< η c. m.< 3.5 (forward) and− 4.0< η c. m.<− 3.0 (backward) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The forward measurement shows a sizable suppression of π 0 production, while the backward measurement shows the first evidence of π 0 enhancement in proton-lead collisions at the LHC. Together, these measurements provide precise constraints on models of nuclear structure and particle production in high-energy nuclear collisions.

The production of prompt D 0 mesons in proton-lead collisions in both the forward and backward rapidity regions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s N N= 8.16 TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The nuclear modification factor of prompt D 0 mesons is determined as a function of the transverse momentum p T, and the rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass frame y*. In the forward rapidity region, significantly suppressed production with respect to p p collisions is measured, which provides significant constraints on models of nuclear parton distributions and hadron production down to the very low Bjorken-x region of∼ 10− 5. In the backward rapidity region, a suppression with a significance of 2.0–3.8 standard deviations compared to parton distribution functions in a nuclear environment expectations is found in the kinematic region of p T> 6 GeV/c and− 3.25< y*<− 2.5, corresponding to x …

In Brazil, the Covid-19 pandemic spread across an extremely unequal and exclusory territory, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable populations. In order to identify how living and habitability conditions and their overlap with gender, race, and class affect the impact of Covid-19 on certain social groups, the “Ação Covid-19” research group developed the Covid-19 Protection Index (CPI) as an alternative to the Human Development Index to measure inequalities in the context of the pandemic. Our aim was to examine specific territories (states, cities, and neighborhoods) and demonstrate how the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus could be associated with a socially exclusory model of territorial occupation, what regions and populations would be most severely affected, and who would suffer most if measures to mitigate the spread of the pandemic were not taken (potentially increasing these populations …

The double differential cross sections of the Drell–Yan lepton pair (, dielectron or dimuon) production are measured as functions of the invariant mass , transverse momentum , and . The observable, derived from angular measurements of the leptons and highly correlated with , is used to probe the low- region in a complementary way. Dilepton masses up to 1 are investigated. Additionally, a measurement is performed requiring at least one jet in the final state. To benefit from partial cancellation of the systematic uncertainty, the ratios of the differential cross sections for various ranges to those in the Z mass peak interval are presented. The collected data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 of proton–proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13. Measurements are compared with predictions based on perturbative …

Measurements of C P asymmetry in charmless B→ P V decays are presented, where P and V denote a pseudoscalar and a vector meson, respectively. Five different B→ P V decays from four final states, B±→ π±π+ π−, B±→ K±π+ π−, B±→ K±K+ K− and B±→ π±K+ K− are analyzed. The measurements are based on a method that does not require full amplitude analyses, and are performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by LHCb between 2015 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.9 fb− 1. In the π+ π− P-wave, in the region dominated by the B±→ ρ (770) 0 K±decay, a C P asymmetry of A C P=+ 0.150±0.019±0.011 is measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first observation of C P violation in this process. For the other four decay channels, in regions dominated by the B±→ ρ (770) 0 π±, B±→ K …

An amplitude analysis of Λ c+→ p K− π+ decays together with a measurement of the Λ c+ polarization vector in semiōleptonic beauty hadron decays is presented. A sample of 400 000 candidates is selected from proton-proton collisions recorded by the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. An amplitude model is developed and the resonance fractions as well as two-and three-body decay parameters are reported. The mass and width of the Λ (2000) state are also determined. A significant Λ c+ polarization is found. A large sensitivity of the Λ c+→ p K− π+ decay to the polarization is seen, making the amplitude model suitable for Λ c+ polarization measurements in other systems.

A first search for the decay is performed by the LHCb experiment with a data sample of proton-proton collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb− 1 recorded at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. Two peaking structures are seen with a local (global) significance of and standard deviations at masses of 6571 and 6694 MeV/, respectively. Upper limits are set on the baryon production cross-section times the branching fraction relative to that of the decay at centre-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, in the and in the rapidity and transverse-momentum ranges from 2.0 to 4.5 and 0 to, respectively. Upper limits are presented as a function of the mass and lifetime.

The interpretation of cosmic antiproton flux measurements from space-borne experiments is currently limited by the knowledge of the antiproton production cross-section in collisions between primary cosmic rays and the interstellar medium. Using collisions of protons with an energy of 6.5 incident on helium nuclei at rest in the proximity of the interaction region of the LHCb experiment, the ratio of antiprotons originating from antihyperon decays to prompt production is measured for antiproton momenta between 12 and . The dominant antihyperon contribution, namely decays from promptly produced particles, is also exclusively measured. The results complement the measurement of prompt antiproton production obtained from the same data sample. At the energy scale of this measurement, the antihyperon contributions to antiproton production are observed to be significantly larger than …

Using a proton–proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7 fb-1, the lifetime of the light Bs0 mass eigenstate, τL, is measured using the Bs0→ J/ψη decay mode to be τL= 1.445±0.016 (stat)±0.008 (syst) ps. A combination of this result with a previous LHCb analysis using an independent dataset corresponding to 3 fb-1 of integrated luminosity gives τL= 1.452±0.014±0.007±0.002 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second due to the uncorrelated part of the systematic uncertainty and the third due to the correlated part of the systematic uncertainty.
